Bridging the Generational Gap: How Mentor-Mentee Training Builds Stronger Trades Teams

Share it

Overview

The skilled trades are facing a generational turning point. Experienced workers are retiring, and new apprentices are entering the field with different expectations, communication styles, and learning needs. Without a bridge between the two, valuable know-how walks out the door and new hires leave before they ever reach their potential.

To close this gap, a large Colorado university’s facilities management department partnered with Upskilling U to deliver its signature mentor-mentee curriculum: TradeReady™ Apprentice Essentials for apprentices and the TradeUP™ Mentorship Series for lead crew members, foremen, and supervisors.

The Challenge

The employer faced two connected challenges:

1. Knowledge Transfer at Risk: Seasoned journeymen and supervisors held decades of technical and safety expertise, but had no structured way to pass it on. 2. Communication Across Generations: Mentors and apprentices often struggled to connect. Feedback was inconsistent, expectations went unspoken, and early-career workers felt unsupported.

The goal was to turn everyday job-site experience into intentional mentorship that strengthens both people and performance.

The Solution & Strategy

Upskilling U delivered a paired training model built around three core pillars:

Two Tracks, One Team: Mentors completed two full-day TradeUP™ sessions, and apprentices completed two full-day TradeReady™ sessions, so both sides built a shared language and shared expectations.

The MashUP Session: Mentors and apprentices then came together in a combined session, working through real job-site scenarios side by side.

Durable Skills in Action: Modules covered emotional intelligence, learning styles, conflict navigation, assertive communication, and bridging the generational gap, the skills that keep crews working well together.

The Results & Impact

The program delivered clear outcomes for participants and the employer:

+14.7% Mentor Confidence: TradeUP™ mentors’ average confidence rose from 3.95 to 4.53 out of 5.

+20.9% Learning & Development Gain: The largest improvement came in the area mentors rated weakest before training. Emotional intelligence rose 18.3%. 95.2% Satisfaction and 100% Recommendation: Every session scored above 4.5 out of 5, and every participant who gave feedback would recommend the training.

“I had a conflict yesterday but instead of getting flustered I smiled and kept it cool.” — TradeUP™ participant, the day after training

Looking Ahead

By training mentors and apprentices side by side, this partnership showed that the trades workforce grows strongest when experience and new talent learn to work together.

Upskilling U continues to bring TradeReady™ and TradeUP™ to employers building lasting, multigenerational trades teams.
